Blood Glucose and Insulin Level Spikes Oh My!!

Do Carbs Spike your Blood Sugar?

So there is a lot of just bad information out there about carbs, blood glucose levels, insulin spikes, and insulin resistance.  Most of it is just plain wrong.  Many people that are talking about this on social media are selling some sort of product that they want you to buy to fix all of these made up problems.  So I am going to let you know what to believe and what not to believe.

So, does your blood glucose spike up after you eat carbs?  Yes, because you ate something.  Newsflash, it also spikes up when you eat protein and fats.  Gasp!!  You want to know why it spikes up?  It spikes up because you just put glucose in your body.   When you eat, it adds glucose to your blood stream via your stomach therefore, your blood glucose is going to go up.   Duh.  And you know what happens after that?  Your insulin level spikes.  Another Gasp!!  You know why?  Because it is supposed to.  Insulin is a hormone secreted by your pancreas when you eat to regulate the glucose level in your bloodstream and transfer the excess into your cells for energy.  What your cells don’t use for energy is then stored in your liver,  muscles and fat cells for later use.  Then after all that takes place, your blood glucose levels go back to normal until you eat again.  Guess what.  That is exactly what your body is supposed to do.  Stop listening to idiots that have no idea what they are talking about when they tell you that a spike in your blood glucose is bad.  It’s not, it is perfectly normal.  Listen, if spiking blood glucose and insulin levels makes you fat, every last human being would be overweight.

Another buzz word is “insulin resistance”, which is a real thing.  This occurs when your cells become resistant to insulin which can result in a build up of blood glucose.  But you know what?  Insulin resistance can only be diagnosed after several tests that need to be done by a medical Doctor with an actual Medical License, preferably one that specializes in endocrinology.  It usually occurs on the cusp of type 2 diabetes which is caused by obesity.  You know who cannot diagnose insulin resistance?  Some Goob on Instagram that doesn’t even have a college degree.  Stop getting medical advice from Instagram y’all.

And for gosh sakes, there is no reason for you to monitor your blood glucose unless you are diabetic or you have been instructed to do so by a Physician.  Again, do not add monitoring your blood glucose to your already neurotic nutrition practices because half naked Susie on Instagram told you that you were in danger of being insulin resistant if you don’t watch it.  Susie is literally conning you into buying something you do not need and she is more than likely making money on it.

So I hope I have cleared up a few things for you.  If you have questions about your blood glucose levels I urge you to see an actual medical Dr for answers, not half naked Susie on Instagram.

Thank you for listening to my rant.  The fear mongering on social media by money hungry influencers is reaching an all time high.  I can hardly keep up.  But I am trying!!  By gosh I am determined to put a stop to the disgusting ways these people prey on women’s insecurities about their bodies.  It has to stop.  And yes, I had a client come to me monitoring her blood glucose because half naked Susie on Insta told her she had to.  She is now free of that neurosis because she knows the truth.  That is where this rant came from.
